Steve joined Becker in early 1959 and soon was given the authority to exercise discretionary account management. He was a Vice President and Board member. He was a very successful investment manager and client developer.

In 1970, he left Becker, and with his brother Roger, along with Steve Peck and Phil Greer, formed Weiss, Peck, and Greer, investment managers. The firm had offices in New York, Chicago, and on the West Coast. In 1998, the firm was sold to Robeco Investment Management. Later, Steve joined Neuberger Berman. Steve developed heart disease in the early 1980s which in part led to significant philanthropy, especially benefitting Cornell, where he became Chairman of the Board from 1989-1997.
