Stanley (Stan) Winter was born in 1926 and grew up in Hyde Park. He attended the University of Chicago for a bit but entered the Army and was trained and practiced as a photographer. After the Army, he graduated from Grinnell College as valedictorian and then received an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1951. He promptly joined A.G. Becker & Co. as a securities analyst. He concentrated in the paper industry and, as described in the Chronicle, had a role in the inception of the funds evaluation business. He left Becker to form his own investment counseling business, S.A. Winter and Associates, in early 1965, with offices in downtown Chicago. Even though he moved his residence to La Jolla in 1976, he kept his office in Chicago, visiting the city regularly for some years before moving the office to San Diego and then to La Jolla. Stan was active in philanthropy both in Chicago and La Jolla. He carried on his investment counseling business until near death, dying in 2002.
