Nathan Becker was A.G. Becker’s father. He had a small stock interest in the original corporation. He must have been very proud of his son to have developed a successful business, and than have the moral strength to find and pay off most to the depositors in the Herman Schaffner Bank.
Obituary:
April 13, 1907. Coal Merchant Succumbs to Pneumonia at Age of 86 Years. Nathan Becker, a pioneer among Chicago business men, died at his home yesterday at the age of 86 years. He had an attack of pneumonia several weeks ago and was recovering when he had a relapse and died. The funeral will be held Sunday morning with services at the home, 911 Grand Blvd. Internment will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Mr. Becker came to Chicago in 1861 and in the early ’80s entered the coal business in which he engaged until his death. In 1853 he married Miss N. Schaffner of Cleveland, Ohio. To this union were born A.G. Becker, head of A.G. Becker & Co; Mrs. Herman Schaffner, and Mrs. Viola Stern. Mr. Becker was a member of the Masonic Fraternity.
