John Griner was born and raised in upstate New York. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and from the Harvard Business School in 1959, staying on for one year as a Research Assistant. He then served in the Strategic Air Command as a B-47E navigator-bombardier. He joined Becker in 1960 working, for 23 years in the corporate finance area and provided training and mentoring to a number of younger associates. In 1983, he moved to California to work for a venture capital firm and in 1987 joined Landmark Partners in Simsbury CT, where he retired as a Managing Partner in the late 1990s. He was an instrument-rated commercial pilot.

He was active in various non-profit organizations over his life time including the New Milford (CT) Hospital, the New York Pops, Harvard University visiting committees, and the Elgin (IL) Academy. He was passionate about education and funded various scholarships. He was a member of various clubs. At his death in 2007, he resided near Kent, CT.

New York Times, September 24, 2007. GRINER–John A. III , died on September 20, 2007 after a battle against brain cancer. He was survived by his wife, Margaret; a brother; three children; and nine grandchildren.
