Clarence “Gus” Torrey joined Becker in 1950. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA and MA in Finance, and PBK, in the early 1930s, Gus stayed on at the University and taught corporate finance for a few years. He joined Lawrence Stern in 1936, and Wampler in 1950. He became a Captain in the U.S. Army in WWII. He joined Kebbon McCormick as an analyst in 1946 and joined Becker in 1950 as an oil and gas analyst. He assisted Joe Levin in the corporate financing of Murphy Oil and Ashland Oil. In 1958, he became a Vice President of Becker and a Vice President of the Security Analyst Society of Chicago. Gus was an early leader in the development of institutional quality research analysis. Gus left Becker in 1960 to become an officer of Carrier Corp.
