Carl Stern was born in 1916. He was the son of David Stern, later to be President and Chairman of A.G. Becker & Co.. A.G. Becker, founder of the firm, was Carl’s great uncle. Carl opened Becker’s office in San Francisco in 1946 and apparently closed the office when he resigned from Becker to form an investment firm with two associates in 1957. (The office was reopened by Mac Skall in 1958). Carl died about 20 years later, in 1976.

San Francisco Chronicle, January 26, 1976. Carl Stern, Investment Banker, Dies. Carl Stern, prominent San Francisco investment banker, died yesterday at Mt. Zion Hospital, of cancer, at age 60. A native of Chicago, Mr. Stern was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College. He moved to San Francisco in 1946 to open an office for A.G. Becker & Co., a Chicago brokerage firm. In 1957, he helped found the Lawson, William and Stern investment firm. Mr. Stern was active in local Jewish charitable organizations and other civic groups. He is survived by his widow, Marjorie; two sons; and a grandson.
